A strong independent woman
Billie – a strong independent woman
Big beautiful Billie lived in one of the cat colonies in Javea port for years. Cared for by one of Javea’s original cat heroes, Eileen Moran. She was always in the company of her friend Porter. When he was rescued after an accident, we couldn’t shake the thought of Billie being on her own. She broke our hearts every time we visited her. During one of those visits, we decided to pick her up and find her a loving home too.
Since it was a spur-of-the-moment decision, we didn’t bring a professional restrainer. We only had a cheap plastic transporter in the car, we had to work with what we had. Luckily all went well—Billie was in the transporter in no time. Easy peasy! We just had to pop into Lidl for a few minutes on the way home, and that’s when Billie properly introduced herself to us….
When we came back, Billie had freed herself from the transporter and was lounging on the dashboard! She was a bit confused (as were we!) but not overly worried. We shot a video of it because we could hardly believe what was happening. Check the video a bit further down on this page and see for yourself.
In the video we mention that Billie is a bit sniffly… that turned out to be more than just a cold. She has a chronic respiratory issue, which meant her chances on being adopted were slim. Transport to a family in The Netherlands via Little Tigers would not be safe for her either. So, Billie stayed with Syl (who had already fallen in love anyway and welcomed the excuse to keep her “Billie Bob”). Being the strong, independent woman that she is, it took Billie a few weeks to warm up to being a pet. In the port she was known to be a cuddly cat, but being affectionate was just her way to secure some extra food. Slowly but surely though, she grew to enjoy cuddles and having her gorgeous long coat brushed regularly.
Fast forward to today: Billie is super happy and healthy. She still sounds a bit like Darth Vader, but that doesn’t stop her from living her best life. She loves climbing trees, patroling the neighbourhood and sunbathing on a lounger in “her” garden. Perhaps inspired by the dogs in the family, Billie has the best recall of the pack! She likes to follow her human around too, supervising (not helping, of course) the gardening and DIY projects around the house. At night she jumps on the bed to cuddle up to Syl and fall asleep knowing she is safe and loved.
In loving memory of the inspirational Eileen Moran.
